Our study indicates his plan has been directed by this question:<br />What are the effective factors on the success or the failure of the economies and why<br />the performances of economies are so different? Realizing the strong effect of<br />institutions on economic performance, in 1970s North conducts several studies<br />about institutions, economic growth and change. However, because of his reliance<br />on the tool box of neoclassic economics, he could not explain the inefficiency of<br />institutions which govern the economies worldwide. Therefore he abandons the idea<br />of efficient institutions, substitutes the assumption of bounded rationality for<br />instrumental rationality, follows the concept of path dependence, and presents a<br />model to explain inefficient institutions and weak economic performance. In<br />subsequent decades North tends in a gradual manner to cognitive science, goes<br />beyond the assumption of bounded rationality, and instead of emphasizing on<br />the computational aspect of cognition emphasizes on the connectionist aspect<br />of cognition. North believes it is the ideologies of the individuals that, during<br />years and in a cumulative way, determine the individual choice and the path of the evolution of economic systems. Therefore, without understanding the process of cognition, it is not possible to obtain a correct understanding of economic changes. این مقاله به دنبال تبیین تطور برنامه پژوهشی داگلاس نورث است. مطالعه آثار وی نشان می دهد: برنامه پژوهشی وی با این سوال هدایت می شود که عوامل موثر بر موفقیت و شکست اقتصادها چیست و چرا عملکرد آنها تا این حد متفاوت است. نورث با این درک که نهادها اثری نیرومند بر عملکرد اقتصادی دارند طی دهه 1970 چندین مطالعه را در حوزه نهادها، رشد و تغییر اقتصادی سامان داد اما نتوانست توضیح دهد که چرا برخلاف پیش بینی نظریه نئوکلاسیک، نهادها کارآمد نیستند و چرا نمی توان عملکرد ضعیف اقتصادی را در این چارچوب تبیین نمود؟ لذا ایده نهادهای کارآمد را رها نمود و به تدریج الگویی برای تبیین تغییرات نهادی (ناکارا) و عملکرد اقتصادی (ضعیف) ارایه نمود. او طی دهه های بعد به تدریج به علوم شناختی روی می آورد و به جای تاکید بر وجه محاسباتی شناخت بر وجه پیوندی و انباشتی آن تاکید می کند؛ زیرا معتقد است این باورها و ایدئولوژیهای افراد است که به طور انباشتی انتخابهای افراد و مسیر تحول نظامهای اقتصادی را در طول سالیان متمادی تعیین می کند و بدون فهم نحوه کارکرد آنها نمی توان درک درستی از تغییرات اقتصادی به دست آورد. https://iee.rihu.ac.ir/article_271_f6ea910111940668e67e53f1454c64a0.pdf
